Plants not plastic, introducing sustainable tulle

Tulle is one of those fabulous fabrics that feels special, dressy & fun. But sadly it’s made from nylon or polyester and will last on this planet for hundreds of years. But not our tulle! It is made from organic cotton.

Our organic cotton tulle

I use soft, drapey, slightly bouncy organic cotton tulle. A wonderful alternative to plastic tulle. Like many plastic tulles it isn’t scrunchy or rough against skin. It is skin kind, planet and farmer kind.

I’m just getting started with the colours, there are many more to come! I’m so exciting to create with this fabric. I longed to create with tulle but just would not could not compromise my values for it. As much as I love linen and silk and other special fabrics this tulle had that texture and interest and lightness that I wanted for skirts.

It is a weightier tulle than polyester tulle so I still need to play with it in draped tops yet but after lots and lots of practice with skirts I am now on the perfect formula for gathers and the right weight when wearing. I have lots more ideas and playing to do in the future like how does it work for a bridal train.

Close up with the tulle

As you can see close up here it has the same weave as polyester tulles but the cotton is a little thicker as a yarn.

Adding a lace trim or a ruffle has really added lovely hang and movement to the tulle, given some structure to the softness.

My girls really enjoy wearing it and touching it. It is very comfy to wear just like wearing a soft cotton dress. It is still sheer so unless it is for dress up or an over layer then it will come lined with organic cotton or tencel.

Tulle colours

Here are some of the colours I’m working with now.

Here are some of the colours I’m excited for in the future.

I’m going to be honest I have seen I can get cheap polyester tulle at around £2 per meter. In contrast organic cotton tulle costs me around 5x that price. So you can see why one of the Ro&Be tulle dresses is overall more in price than other tulle flower girl dresses. But if you want a dress that not only will be wonderful to wear but when it has been loved many many times over it will gently return back to nature.

Hopefully you can see how beautiful this fabric is but if you feel you would like a little sample before ordering your tulle clothing then please do get in touch.
